Lavender: Words written for my grandmother

Lavender

Soft words of greeting

Summer gardens

Garden snakes

Houses of grand trinkets

Ironing boards

Cauliflower

Clam chowder

Eating dirt in your front bed of flowers

Large canisters of rice, sugar and flower

Your kitchen table was red

“Goddammit I bet I’ll whoop yo ass!”

Walnuts in bowls

Metal nut crackers

The most interesting living room with encyclopedias

Corn stalks taller than my uncle

Marijuana plants sprinkled in

The best smile with the best lips that spoke the word Pootsack

Buttons

Yarn

Cooking

Baking

Severe words for foolishness

Your glasses

How you would neatly fold paper

Shopping for deli meat

The smell of lavender

I will remember all of these things of you.

I will not remember the things that brought you pain.

You will be lavender to me.

  1. Very realistic and tangible. I can surely relate to the words.

  2. Thank you. I wrote these words for her while she was sick and read them for my family at her homegoing service.
